This year it's Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit", and while my download will probably go to the Wombles' rerelease of "Wombling Merry Christmas" I would love to see a counter-cultural choice for the Christmas Album Number One. Seriously, where the hell have all the good Christmas songs gone?! Anyway, the past couple of years have seen a new development in the music market, as those adverse to the effects of saccharine, poor-quality Christmas pop garbage choose instead to download a classic, usually anti-festive song to push towards the hallowed turf of Christmas number one. No matter how you feel about the festive period itself, and not wanting to sound like a shameless nostalgic, there's just not the same quality of music as their used to be. These days the festive period for music fans means the choice between the X Factor winner and one of the piss-poor reality TV Christmas covers that flood the market in the few weeks before the big day on December 25th.
